In the Know…

Do tell…

We all like to be “in the know”, don’t we? Whether it’s a news story, the latest from friends and family, or just all the informative reel scrolling and indulging in all of internet facts, there’s so much to learn and absorb. But it can become problematic when it’s opinion after opinion and has us constantly chasing. And we all do it, don’t we? We want to know! I know it’s true for me. Someone has news..do tell!

But lately…I gotta tell you….it’s overwhelming. I would like to be less aware. I want to be LESS “In the Know”.

Pretty please with a cherry on top. 🍒

Deciphering…

That said, we can’t just bury our head in the sand and block out the world. Not at all. But man, it’s overwhelming. I guess I’m just desiring to be ‘aware with balance’. Aren’t you all so dog tired of all of the opinions? This modern world along with all of its relentless information is nonstop. And it’s not just online. It’s everything and comes from many different sources. For instance, “Eat this, don’t eat that”. This is good for you and then the next person says “oh no, that’s toxic”. That’s just one tiny example. In my world, it’s also sunscreen, makeup, vitamins, on and on. And to top it off, one aficionado completely disagrees with another. Hard to keep up, my friends.

In the way of food and nutrition, for example, I am being more cognizant of what I’m taking into my body and doing my best in deciphering what it needs. And it’s important for sure. I am feeling better and giving this temple what it should have to function best. But sometimes, you just gotta thank God, bless your food and trust that He is able and will take care of it. Going to and fro and here and there for all of the answers is tiring. Our best bet is to do some balanced research and then block out all of that extra noise.

Different era…

As a Gen Xer, I was born in the 70’s, raised in the 80’s, graduated from college and married in the 90’s and had my son in 2005. So, like many of you, each decade mentioned has had such stark differences. From growing up without technology to now being over the top inundated with it, it’s overwhelming at times. I mean I remember getting our first microwave and thinking “wow, what is this crazy hot box”?! From going to the library and delving into encyclopedias to now having every bit of info at your immediate touch….such a different era, an absolute shift.

I was just saying to my husband that this is one of my new goals…to become more oblivious :). There are many wonderful things and I’m thrilled to be able to find information at the touch of a screen. It’s satisfying. But I think it gets dicey when there is too much and negative at that. I would like to know the important things, and toss the rest.

Delve into truth…

This verse mentioned above in Ecclesiastes 1:18 is so good. Because what it means is that there is a burden of awareness. As you learn more about the world, you become acutely aware of its brokenness. So, that’s part of it. But the other part is what are we taking in? There is so much information out there. And can I be honest…much of it is opinion. So when we get ourselves trying to figure it all out, it is a downright overload.

It is good to know and have wisdom. But the difference lies in the source of the wisdom. “Wisdom that comes from worldly pursuits or mere fact-gathering leads to despair, whereas wisdom grounded in faith and reverence for God brings peace.” Studying this world without involving the Creator leads to emptiness and frustration. Delving into truth is what brings that freeing peace. The choice is ours.

Ditch the negative…

In a nutshell, I’ll leave you with something brilliant my husband said this week. “Change your algorithm”. You know that fancy word for when you’re scrolling online…the algorithm picks up your likes and starts showing you more of the things you gear toward. And so, I thought he’s right. We can change it figuratively and literally. You can decide what you take in through your eye, ear and spirit. You really can. In every area. Be “in the know”, but the right kind. Choose life!

Deuteronomy 30:19

“I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose LIFE.”

Here’s to being less “in the know”!
