Head to Toe…

Are you covered? And I mean spiritually covered, protected from head to toe? As of late, I have been really feeling that we need to be suited up with the armor that Paul writes about in Ephesians. The armor of God is a necessity in our Christian lives. If you are a believer living as salt and light in a dark world, then you most assuredly need to be girded up. We have an enemy who would like nothing more than for you to be vulnerable and unguarded.

God has a plan for us and let me tell you….the enemy will, at all costs, try and thwart God’s direction in our lives. That is why it is imperative that we determine to make right choices but in order to do so, we need to be covered from ‘Head to Toe’!

First, we need to know who the real enemy is. 1 Peter 5:8 says “Be sober, be watchful: your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.” And let me tell you, with the enemy, there is NO mercy. Especially if you are a believer declaring the salvation and goodness of God! His main aim is to steal, kill and destroy. We need to be prepared at all times because the devil could care less if we’re ready. He actually prefers that we’re not! Ephesians 6 helps us to know where and how we need to become and remain guarded from the enemy and his schemes!

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and sword of the Spirit which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions, with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.” Eph. 6:10-18

There is so much knowledge and wisdom in this scripture on God’s armor and could be expounded on so much more in depth but for the sake of a blog, here’s a bit about each.

• The Belt of Truth

“The first piece of armor Paul discusses is the belt of truth. … The belt is where Roman soldiers stored their weapon – without a belt, they could not carry a weapon! So, why does Paul associate the belt of a soldier with truth? For Christians, God’s Word is truth, and it serves as our foundation.”

• The Breastplate of Righteousness

Righteousness requires us to make a choice to regularly engage with Scripture and spend time connecting with God. So, when we do encounter temptations and doubts on the battlefield, we come fully equipped to fight! Satan is relentless and will try and attack where and when we are most vulnerable. “Like a Roman breastplate, this breastplate protects our vital organs spiritually. This righteousness, God’s holiness and perfection, comes to us through Jesus’ death and resurrection on the cross. Because Jesus took our place by living the life we should have lived and dying the death we deserved to die, he offers a covering of righteousness.”

• The Shoes of the Gospel of Peace

Having our feet fitted with the shoes of the gospel of peace allows us to be prepared. As Christians, we should always be ready!!Ready to shared Christ and His good news with those who do not know Him. That is our commission. Love Jesus, and love others. And in doing so, striving to reach them for Christ! We should always be ready to share the gospel at any given moment.

• The Shield of Faith

Hebrews 11:1 says, “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” Faith is more than just a feeling. To have faith is to believe God created the world and sent His only Son to die for our sins so we might have eternal life.” Our faith can guard us just as a shield would guard a soldier in battle. In order to be able to fight back and gain protection, we need to take up the shield of faith.

• The Helmet of Salvation

As we wear the helmet of salvation every day, it protects our heads, our minds, and our thoughts. Without a helmet, a soldier could be killed instantly with one blow. In the same way, the helmet of salvation protects us from the blow of the enemy. Our minds are a battlefield and it’s important that we become more insulated against the suggestions, desires, and traps the enemy tries to set. We need to guard our minds and wear our helmets!

• The Sword of the Spirit

I find it so interesting that this is the only piece of armor that is for offensive use. The others are used for protection and defending. Paul defines the sword of the Spirit as the Word of God. So this brings clarity that we should be aggressive in getting into His Word. “For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account” (Hebrews 4:12-13).

We are indeed in dark times but there’s hope. The hope of Jesus and His Word. We can be assured that as we put on the armor, and trust in the Savior, we can withstand anything! We are strong in the Lord and in the power of His might!

God bless your souls!
